In 1997, a group of people interested in art and culture came together with the common goal of creating a place where artists of various disciplines could find suitable conditions for their exhibition activities. In addition to local art, contemporary art from outside South Tyrol should also be brought to the Unterland in order to offer the population the opportunity to confront themselves with current artistic positions and to sensitise them to them. In this context, the art education offered in the gallery plays an essential role.

In the meantime, the Kunstforum Unterland has acquired a significant status within the South Tyrolean art and cultural landscape as an infrastructure for the mediation of contemporary art through continuous exhibition activity as well as readings, book presentations and discussion rounds. The gallery of the district community Überetsch Unterland thus fulfils the institution's mandate to promote and support cultural activities.

The exhibition venue and its programme have a clearly defined profile that focuses on quality and distinctive focal points. A selection committee chooses 6 artists each year to be included in the respective exhibition calendar.
