The medieval market place Neumarkt (or Egna in Italian) is situated at an altitude of 217 metres. Neumarkt held an important position even when it was first founded because of its important geographical location between north and south. The famous Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer was imprisoned for one night in one of the dark cellars there on his way to Mantua. Today, Neumarkt is a cultural centre of the South Tyrol Unterland with the character of a city, picturesque porticos and densely packed buildings in the Venetian style.

Friendly people, superb wine and many excellent events make Neumarkt a great holiday destination.
