Wine has been at home at Hof am Keller in Montagna since the early 16th century.
The first officially documented owner of Hof am Keller was Nikolaus am Keller, who was already managing the winery in 1431. This is also where the farm’s name comes from, a name that has been passed down to the present day. Around a hundred years later, also documented in historical records, the owner at the time was widely known as a wine merchant. His network of customers extended as far as Sterzing and from there, across the Brenner Pass, to Schwaz and Kufstein.
The present hereditary farm has been owned by the March family for more than 200 years. Today, the family makes use of the estate’s privileged location to cultivate grape varieties that are particularly well suited to the area. Pinot Noir is the main variety, followed by Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon.
Until the late 1990s, not only their own grapes but also grapes from local suppliers were processed at the winery. Today, Maike and Christian manage the estate, which is more than 700 years old, and produce some of the wines themselves. From pruning to harvest, the grapes are carefully tended before maturing in the centuries-old wine cellar and developing into fine wines.
That tradition remains an essential part of the estate is only natural: more than half a millennium of history comes with a responsibility to preserve and carry it forward.
