The Ritten earth pyramids are erosion phenomena and occur where Ice Age moraine clay was deposited by glaciers in the valleys. The material is rock-hard when dry. In contact with water it becomes a clayey slurry that flows downhill. The clay remains protected from rain under the large stones; this is how the earth columns form and grow taller with each rainfall.
