The Dürer Trail is a historic hiking route that follows the journey of the famous German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. In 1494, during his first trip to Venice, Dürer was forced to take a detour due to flooding in the Adige Valley. This alternative route led him from the Klösterle in St. Florian near Laag, through Buchholz and the Sauch Pass, all the way to the impressive Earth Pyramids of Segonzano in the Cembra Valley.
The 35-kilometer trail starts at the historic
Klösterle
, a former 12th-century hospice. From there, it winds through Laag and Buchholz, ascending to the
Sauch Pass
, where breathtaking panoramic views await. The journey continues to the picturesque
Lago Santo (Holy Lake)
before reaching the striking
Earth Pyramids of Segonzano
, one of Trentino’s most remarkable natural formations.
Along the way, signposts featuring Dürer’s “AD” monogram and information panels guide visitors through a diverse landscape of vineyards, forests, and historical sites. The Dürer Trail offers a perfect mix of nature, history, and culture, making it an excellent choice for both experienced hikers and cultural enthusiasts. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to explore this trail, with pleasant temperatures and stunning seasonal colors enhancing the experience.
