Those who choose the Überetsch variant of the Via Claudia Augusta, a slightly more demanding but highly rewarding scenic route, stay on the orographic right side of the Adige Valley near Andrian and follow the old Wine Road towards Unterrain.
The route climbs up to St. Pauls in the Überetsch area, passing through the two largest wine-growing municipalities in South Tyrol: Eppan a.d.W. and Kaltern a.d.W. Shortly after Kaltern a.d.W., the route descends to Lake Kaltern, the warmest bathing lake in the Alps, and continues to Tramin a.d.W., famous for its Gewürztraminer wine. The picturesque wine villages further south – Kurtatsch a.d.W., Margreid a.d.W. and Kurtinig a.d.W. – are also worth visiting for their wineries and wine estates. Near Neumarkt, the two variants join again with the Via Claudia Augusta along the Adige cycle path and continue to Salurn a.d.W. and then on into Italian-speaking Trentino.
