Experience culture in the south of South Tyrol

Our cultural hints and tips

In the south of South Tyrol we bring you a special cultural experience… let yourself be surprised:

  • Open-air theatre at Neumarkt: The open-air theatre of the South Tyrol Unterland was founded in 1968 as the first of its kind. The amateur stage soon gained recognition at home and abroad, setting the standard for theatre in South Tyrol. Today open-air theatre at the South Tyrol Unterland “Theatre on the Etsch” has developed into a professional culture industry and become cultural ambassador for the Unterland. Worthy of note is the development of an independent, up-to-date South Tyrolean (folk) theatre located at the exact crossover point between two cultures and bringing in young, home-grown talent.
  • Castelfeder: Castelfeder – the Arcadia of Tyrol – so the Romantic painters called the Auer hill in the South Tyrol Unterland, and there are all sorts of historic and pre-historic sites to discover here.
  • The Dürer route: Albrecht Dürer, the great Nuremberg painter, graphic artist and theorist has also been a visitor to our part of the world. The artist passed through our region five hundred years ago on a journey to Venice. The historic path he trod is known to us today as the “Dürerweg” (Dürer route). It stretches from Klösterle in San Florian to the “earth pyramids” in Segonzano and on to Trentino (Italian Tyrol). Visit the places, valleys and forests which can be found in the drawings of the German artist Albrecht Dürer.
  • Concerts in the castle: Old walls coming to life… with unique concerts in the castle!
  • Haderburg : The Haderburg stands in solitary splendour high above Salurn. Since 2003, the castle has been open to enthusiasts of medieval archaeology and those looking to enjoy the unique natural atmosphere of the place. The castle also plays host to a number of musical, literary and folk events. Tables and benches line the main courtyard offering visitors a place for calm and relaxation.
  • Fleims valley railway path: Walk or cycle along the old Fleims valley railway path…
  • Katzenleiter trail: Over 500 stone steps take you past a waterfall to the Leiter ruins. Benches offer resting places and panoramic views delight the eye.
  • The porticos of Neumarkt: Stroll through Neumarkt’s porticos and soak up the unique atmosphere, enjoying a cappuccino and some retail therapy in the little shops.
  • Archways in Salurn: Salurn is characterized by its many archways. Well worth a look!
  • Sculpture garden at Buchholz: High above Salurn, at Buchholz, the artist Tatz Borgogno has created her own personal garden of sculptures in the middle of the woods. A truly idyllic spot!
  • Barbara Chapel: To this day, the ruined walls of the former Barbara Chapel stand on the highest point of Castelfeder hill. Built in the Romanesque style, the first written record of this chapel dates to 950 and it was most likely in use until about 1750 before falling into ruin. A precious altar shrine was salvaged from the ruins, the work of no less than the famous altar carver Hans Klocker. Today this altar is in the town museum in Bozen. One of the baroque altars dedicated to Saint Barbara can be found today in the St Peter’s Church in Auer.
  • Monastery at Laag: The monastery at San Florian near Laag/Neumarkt was built in the 13th century and in the past offered lodging to numerous travellers, Albrecht Dürer among them. Its Romanesque structure has remained astonishingly intact. It lost its special function at the end of the 13th century with the opening of the nearby market at Neumarkt, since many travellers preferred to stay in guesthouses in the attractive heart of the village.
  • Culinary events: Food and drink are a pure cultural experience… just take a look!
  • Lakeside theatre at Lake Kaltern: each summer sees musicals performed on the lakeside stage at Lake Kaltern… let the music and unique atmosphere transport you to another world!
  • Bletterbach gorge : explore the canyon of South Tyrol and immerse yourself in a world of “geology“.

The museums of South Tyrol are also well worth a visit!
